Wear it Purple Managers Briefing

August 27 is Wear it Purple Day! Are you ready to start a conversation about LQBTQ+ inclusion?

This year the theme is ‘Start the conversation… Keep it going!’

To support this year’s theme and our peers in property and construction, we’re working on tools to help you start conversations… and keep them going!

Teams Talks focusing on the use of inclusive language will soon be available for you to use with your teams on Wear it Purple Day (or any day of the year!)

In this briefing session we will introduce you to the Teams Talks and answer any questions you may have.

Based on prior experience the session should go for no more than 30 minutes, however up to an hour has been allowed.

LGBTQ+ Inclusion - Is the Australian Construction Industry in Transition?

Despite the construction sector being Australia’s third largest employer, and unique challenges compared to other sectors there has been very little research into the experience of LGBTQ+ employees and the barriers and opportunities that they face at work.

To address this Lendlease partnered with academics from the Australian Human Rights Institute at UNSW Sydney to research barriers to LGBTQ+ inclusion in construction. The research included an international literature review and 23 in-depth interviews with participants across Australia with trade and office based backgrounds.

We are hosting a panel discussion facilitated by Aaron Spicer, Lendlease LGBTQ+ Pride network chair to launch the research findings. The panel will discuss the reasons to focus on LGBTQ+ inclusion in construction, findings and recommendations for the industry going forward.

The Inc-Loo-Sion Project

Held on June 2nd and hosted by MinterEllison, the event was attended by 70 people in person and online nationally. We heard from our wonderful speakers, Ben Thomas and Katie Box from The GPT Group, and Ruby Ramachandran from MinterEllison, who took us through the results of their 2020 survey and discussed best practice and next steps for inclusive public bathrooms.

We also heard how leaders like The GPT Group have begun providing greater choice in response to customer expectations, adding all gender options at their Melbourne Central Shopping Centre and Casuarina Square in Darwin, with plans for further inclusion across their portfolio.

The event also marked the launch of our Inc-loo-sion Fact Sheet that supports inclusion champions in employers, building designers, developers and owners to start conversations within their organisation. We are working on more detailed considerations and technical design guidance which will be released later in the year.
